Tooth decay... A basic understanding and prevention

How many of us have seen dark dots on our teeth, or even between our teeth. they are usually dark brown to black in color and causes food to get stuck in them. If we have observed these black dots, they tend to grow in size and/or depth too. These are dental careis, a multi-factorial disease of the tooth that may lead to discoloration of tooth, discomfort, food lodgement, pain, break down of tooth structure susequently loos of tooth. The word caries has been derived for the latin word meaning 'rottenness'. Dental caries are also called as tooth decay, cavities.
Dental caries can occure on any surface of the tooth, from crown to root. This depends on the favorability of the site to cause caries. There is no single cause for dental caries, hence it is called as a multi-factorial disease.
The three basic requirements or factors for dental caries to occure are
1) Host
2) Bacteria
3) Substrate (Diet)
The above mentioned triad has a common entity for them together i.e. TIME, it has an important role in formation of denta caries.

Process of caries formation can be explained in a very simple way.
a) Food lodgement on the surface of the tooth.
b) Digestion of lodged food by bacteria.
c) Bacterial releases byproduct in the form of acid.
d) Acid causes demineralization of tooth structure (enamel or dentin).
e) Enamel demineralization results in exposure of dentin, leading to pulp exposure.

The dental caries process causes destruction of tooth structure by chemical process and the force of chewing food on the undermined tooth structure cause crumbling and breakdown of the tooth integrity.

Caries can be of many types
1) Rampant caries.
2) Arrested caries.
3) Pit and Fissure caries.
4) Nursing bottle caries.
5) Secondary caries (caries occurring on the tooth that has been restored previously)
6) Root caries.

Prevention
1) Brush twice daily with a fluoridated tooth paste.
2) Floss twice daily between every teeth.
3) Visit a dentist regularly (every 3-6 months)
4) Pit and fissure sealents. (done after permanent teeth erupt in children, prooved to be most effective)
5) Reduce frequency of sugar intake.
6) If possible, use of only brush after every meal.
